The Importance of Sports & Physical Education for Our Students.

Go Ravenswood Rams!  Ravenswood
School has four traveling basketball teams: 5/6th grade boys, 5/6th grade girls, 7/8th grade boys and 7/8th grade girls.  At Ravenswood we strive to provide opportunities for personal growth and development of our students while also reinforcing positive influences, self-confidence, self esteem and the ability to excel on and off the court.  We are dedicated to educating and motivating each player while encouraging teamwork, sportsmanship and fun, through the sport of basketball. Coach Switzer, Coach Hart and Coach "Kitty" Conde head up the Rams basketball program in which Ravenswood School is competitive year after year.  Try-outs are in December and the season runs through March.   For a complete calendar of our home and away games plus practice times, please see our For Students page.

Ravenswood Athletic & Recreational Events. Ravenswood School offers lots of exciting, fun and challenging annual physical fitness events.  These include the American Heart Association's 'Jump Rope for Heart', our Teacher vs. Student Basketball & Dodge Ball Tournaments, Athletic Field Day and more.  For more information, please see our News & Events page.  You'll also find dates and times for these events on our School Calendar page.

Our in-school physical education program is the cornerstone of an active lifestyle for all of our students, pre-K through 8th grade, and is part of their every day.  Weather permitting, recess is taken outdoors for all grades.  The Ravenswood School physical education program provides the skills, knowledge and attitudes that facilitate a student's choosing physical activity as a viable option not only during school hours, but after school, at home and in their community as well.  Our full-time, highly-qualified physical education teacher, Mr. Jeffrey Switzer, will:

  • Establish a positive, safe learning environment for all students.
  • Teach a variety of physical activities that make class fun and enjoyable.
  • Create maximum opportunities for students of all abilities to be successful.
  • Promote student honesty, integrity and good sportsmanship.
  • Guide students into becoming skillful and confident movers.
  • Facilitate the development and maintenance of physical fitness.
  • Assist students in setting and achieving personal goals.
  • Provide specific, constructive feedback to help students master motor skills.
  • Afford opportunities for students to succeed in cooperative and competitive situations.
  • Prepare and encourage students to practice skills and be active for a lifetime.

As an increased benefit, the importance of physical education has been documented in the landmark report of the Surgeon General entitled "Physical Activity and Health".  Adults who have been physically active throughout their lives:

  • Have a reduced risk for heart disease.
  • Have lower risk for certain types of cancer.
  • Handle stress better.
  • Live healthy and perhaps longer lives.

Physical education is the subject that directly addresses these critical issues of health and well being.  Research sponsored by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports revealed why some adults are physically active throughout their lives:

  • They enjoy physical activity.
  • They have a positive attitude towards exercise.
  • They are aware of the benefits of exercise.
  • They have (successfully) participated in exercise or sports in the past.

All of this is exactly what the Ravenswood School physical education program is designed to do: guide youngsters in the process of becoming physically active and healthy for a lifetime!
