Everything your child needs is available in one place!  Youth Guidance presents: Before and After School Adventures (BASA).

Ravenswood School,
in partnership with Youth Guidance, offers on-site, supervised before and after school care plus the opportunity to enroll in an exciting and ever-expanding variety of classes and workshops for students of all ages.

Our before and after school programming extends our day from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm.  This not only gives our students additional academic and artistic enrichment opportunities, it helps our families manage their days much more efficiently and effectively.

Before School:  Early Morning Jumpstart.  A supervised play and homework help program starting at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast served at 8:30 am.  Regular school classes begin at 8:55 a.m.

After School:  After School Adventures.  Ravenswood School offers this exciting program as the result of a partnership between Ravenswood School and Youth Guidance.  It is an on-site, year-long, quality after school program from the hours of 2:45 - 6:00 p.m. The program offers a variety of activities designed to supplement the school's curriculum and keep students engaged, happy and learning.  Each day of the program includes an academic/homework hour and two hours of physical activities, games and other extracurricular classes.

BASA also offers the option to sign up for one or more Enrichment Activities including dance, art, drama, foreign language, music, and more.  If you choose not to enroll in Before & After School, you still can enroll in one or more of the Enrichment Activities of your choice.  Please see the Enrichment Activities Application link below for more details.

The Enrichment Programs run for 30 weeks and are usually broken into three 10-week sessions to give lots of students a chance to enroll and are usually 45 minutes to 1.5 hours in length.  Your child will be escorted to any of the programs that he or she is involved in and all programs are on-site, except for ATA Taekwondo.  Each term, parents will choose from a selection of available activities on the current Activities Application.  This is a great way to enroll your child in a variety of hobbies and interests that may otherwise be too expensive or time-consuming.

Enrichment Activity Descriptions:

Art.  All Ages.  Each class will investigate the diverse world of art; specifically the use of design and technique used in mixed media creations.  Every child will create their own mixed media work to support their understanding and enjoyment of this art style.  Each class will also be supplemented with studies in contemporary art to help develop a greater appreciation of our modern world.

ATA Taekwondo (TKD).  All Ages. This class takes place at the Chicago ATA Black Belt Academy.  TKD is the world’s most popular martial art; more people practice TKD than any other martial art in the world.  Physically, TKD develops strength, speed, balance, flexibility, and stamina.  Throughout its philosophy, TKD strongly emphasizes control and self-defense while instilling confidence and self-discipline.  "The Chicago ATA Black Belt Academy strives to help students learn to be leaders in everything they do.  All classes are taught using the safest and most exciting instruction methods, and we are a member of America's leading martial arts organization, the American Taekwondo Association (ATA)".  Please note: this class takes place off-site.  Children enrolled in this course are escorted to and from the Academy, located at 4433 N. Ravenswood Avenue.

Chess: "Iron Rooks Chess".  All Ages.  Studies prove that strong chess education benefits a child's mental development and consequently their test scores in all academic fields.  For the Iron Rooks team chess education is more than just an explanation of game fundamentals and strategies.  We present the parallels between life and chess in all of our lessons and we make it easy for all of our students to apply these tactics to their lives.  Visit Iron Rooks Chess Collective.

Dance.  All Ages.  Come experience the pure joy that comes with dance!  The goal is to help each student understand how the body moves and interacts with the world around them, improving balance and coordination.  One set of classes will focus on the exploration of movement through play and structured games, suggested for our younger students.  A more technical set of classes focuses on body structure and how this applies to dance technique and performance.  The technique classes extend study to multiple dance forms including jazz, ballet, modern, lyrical, hip hop, and gesture.

Drumming.  All Ages.  Drumming has been used for centuries in nearly all cultures for rituals, healing, and celebration.  Percussion music provides opportunities for creative self-expression and for group participation.  Group drumming promotes many elements of wellness including exercise, social support, intellectual stimulation, spirituality, self-expression, and stress reduction.  For more information on this collective of world percussionists who promote community, music and education through drumming, visit Pulse Beat Music.

Girls on the Run.  Girls, 3rd-8th.  Girls on the Run Chicago©, part of Girls on the Run International, is a life-changing program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.  It combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts and encouraging, positive development techniques.  Girls on the Run is the name of the organization but it encompasses two programs: Girls on the Run for 3rd - 5th graders and Girls on Track for 6th - 8th graders. The principal philosophies of the programs are the same yet the topics are different, each centering on their own issues and discussions.  Both are 12-week character building, age-appropriate programs of experiential learning which teaches very specific and well-defined social and personal skills and helps the girls make healthy choices for their body and minds for a lifetime.  The program culminates in a non-competitive 5K run event at Montrose Harbor which gives the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.

Guitar.  All Ages.  We will be enlisting the help of the experts at Pulse Beat Music to lead our students through guitar lessons.  These classes are the newest addition to our enrichment program and are sure to be a great time.  Students will learn guitar technique, as well as a few musical phrases and songs.  Please note: students must provide their own guitar or contact the BASA office at yg.ravenswood@gmail.com if they are in need of one.

Holiday Make & Take Workshops.  All Ages.  These are individual one-day workshops offered throughout the year at various holiday times.  It gives the kids a great opportunity to make fun gifts for their families as well as holiday accessories or decorations for the holiday table.  Workshops take place for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwaanza, St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day, Springtime, Mother's Day, and Father's Day.  Each workshop is $10 and sign-up flyers are delivered throughout the school as each holiday approaches.

KidzLit.  K-5th.  KidzLit® is an exciting new program in which students will make connections with literature.  Each student participates in activities to reinforce their understanding through being read to, playing reading games, and expressing their thoughts on the book of the week.  By the end of the program students will have a greater understanding and a deeper appreciation for literature.  This program works to help the student achieve higher grades in this subject.

KidzMath.  K-6th.  KidzMath® is a program geared at making math fun and practical.  Students will learn through the use of games, activities, and discussions.  These activities keep math from becoming overwhelming by making math entertaining and exciting.  Students achieve higher grades when participating in KidzMath.  The program includes a division of Beginners for students who are new to the program and Exploration for those who have already participated.

Ravenswood Choir.  All Ages.  All of Ravenswood’s resident Divas and Pavarottis are invited to join the new Ravenswood Choir!  All experience levels welcome.  Each day will be a different grade level.

Sewing Club.  5th-8th.  This class allows our students to learn the techniques used in sewing in order to create useful and unique projects.  Each two hour class allows the students the opportunity to work on these projects using sewing machines and materials.  Past projects have included hats, scarves, pajama pants, table runners, tissue box, and tissue paper holders.

Spanish.  All Ages. Every child enrolled in full-time after-school care will have Spanish class up to two times a week. By learning a language young, children are taking advantage of a window of opportunity to learn naturally and easily. Research shows additional cognitive benefits to learning a second language at an early age.  These children also demonstrate better problem solving skills, enhanced spatial relations, and heightened creativity.  The long-term result: according to the College Entrance Examination Board, they go on to score higher on SATs.  Socially, children who learn another language are more culturally sensitive, more globally savvy, and better positioned to enjoy greater career opportunities in a global marketplace.

Theater.  All Ages.  Younger students have a a blast exploring character development, middle students practice their skills and work on teamwork and confidence, while older students learn improvisation and sketch comedy skills.  Theater helps to improve memory and gives the students a chance to be creative in their expressions as well as improve their public speaking skills.  Students perform on stage at the end of each class session.
